Healing Hand and Wrist Injuries
I have had the privilege of becoming the private Chiropractic Physician for the Great Grand Master Fred Villari, voted numerous times as the Grand Master ofthe Martial Arts for the 20th Century. He is also known as the Magnificent and Great Grand Master in the Martial Arts World.
Grand Master Villari had an accident that involved a serious right-hand wrist compression injury, which rotated the lunate –scaphoid bone in the wrist. As a result of the injury, he sought out the most qualified hand and wrist surgeon in the Unites States of America . Because the hands are of the utmost importance for any man, woman or child who wants to participate in any active or contact sport or recreation of any kind, it is a known fact that without these tools in proper working order you become rendered useless.
This hand surgeon diagnosed Grand Master Villari with Lunate–Scaphoid Dissociation. He recommended the following procedure: A Row Capectomy! He said that he will be removing these three bones - he will be changing a linked joint to a single hinged joint and because of this, Grand Master Villari will experience a 50% reduction in motion. In addition, there would be a certain percentage of post operative stiffness which would make him lose at least a minimum of 60-70 % loss of motion at the best and it would take at least as long as a year before he would see the maximum benefit following that surgery for the flexor extensor muscles to properly contract and adjust with the shortened wrist height.
The doctor informed him that the ultimate joint treatment would be wrist fusion! Imagine that. He also told Grand Master Villari that regardless of what’s done, doing martial arts or teaching it is completely out of the question, and he must abandon practicing the Martial Arts permanently and modify his lifestyle, which he was not very happy about.
Grand Master Villari told me personally, “I will cut off my hand and put a hook there before I quit the fighting arts.” Believe me I have no doubt he would have followed through.
The Grand Master had heard about me and consulted with me about his condition before making a decision – he wanted me to give my opinion as to if surgery could be avoided. I began treating his injury and after three treatments which consisted of specific wrist manipulation and Chiropractic knowledge, I successfully placed the lunate–scahpoid bone to its original pre-injury position. I then gave the Grand Master a series of the most powerful wrist and hand exercises to do to achieve decompression and strengthen the ligaments, and tendons and to assure that the lunate-scaphoid would hold its position. I recommended a series of simple wrist exercises in order to avoid wrist compression injuries and typical situations like he had experienced. This applies to all sports.
